Heritage sites on Dartmoor

English Heritage is a non-departmental public body of the United Kingdom government with a broad remit of managing the historic built environment of England. There are currently 6 English Heritage establishments on Dartmoor. Its functions for maintaining ancient monuments had previously been undertaken by part of the Department of the Environment. English Heritage's best known role is as the steward of over 400 significant historical and archaeological sites, from Stonehenge to the world's earliest iron bridge. In 2007/08 5.3 million visits were paid to staffed English Heritage properties. It also has major responsibilities in conservation, giving advice, registering and protecting the historic environment.

Letterboxing on Dartmoor

Letterboxing on Dartmoor

Letterboxing originated on Dartmoor in the 19th century and has become increasingly popular in recent decades. Watertight containers, or 'letterboxes', are hidden throughout the moor, each containing a visitor's book and a rubber stamp. Visitors take an impression of the letterbox's rubber stamp as proof of finding the box and record their visit by stamping their own personal stamp in the letterbox's logbook. A recent related development is geocaching. Geocache clues make use of GPS coordinates, whereas letterboxing clues tend to consist of grid references and compass bearings. [Source Wikipedia 30.06.10 please submit a better description] Please join in and add all the information that can be found. Within this group you can add letterbox points to our map review each letterbox and add the box to your profile if you've found it (no cheating). Please tell us if the map is a good idea if not what system you would like implemented we love Dartmoor but don't know enough about Letterboxing at present. Which is why we are looking for someone who has a good knowledge of letterboxing on Dartmoor to be an administrator of the community. [Discussion continued in the forums below]
